Née à Kalisz en Pologne en 1920, Vitke Kemper était une étudiante de 19 ans, active dans Hashomer Hatzair, le mouvement des jeunesses socialistes sionistes, quand les Allemands ont envahi son pays. Elle a alors fui pour Vilnius, en Lituanie, qui était encore libre.

A l'appel du poète Abba Kovner, elle fit partie en janvier 1942 des fondateurs du FPO, Fareynikte Partizaner Organizatsye, le mouvement de résistants juifs du ghetto de Vilnius.
Elle fut souvent courrier, assurant la liaison entre différents groupes d'une ville à l'autre.

Avec ses compagnons résistants Izie Marskevitsh and Moshe Brauze, elle participa à la première action de sabotage réussie, plaçant une bombe sur le chemin d'un train allemand transportant de l'équipement vers le front.
Elle participa également à la libération de Vilnius en 1944.

Elle épousa Abba Kovner et immigra avec lui en Palestine en 1946. Elle y travailla comme psychologue.
Ils s'installèrent dans le kibboutz Ein HaHoresh, où elle mourut à 92 ans le 25 février 2012.


Born in Kalisz, Poland, Vitke was a 19-year-old university student and activist in Hashomer Hatzair, the socialist zionist youth movement, when she escaped the German invasion, to Vilna, still a free city.

After Abba Kovner issued a "Call for Action" against the Nazis, the ghetto’s political movements united to form the United Partisan Organization.
Vitke became a courier to underground groups in different cities, alerting them to the genocide and the resistance to it. Women also served as the couriers in the Resistance because it was "easier for a woman to go into the streets and to be unrecognized as a Jew, and also the Germans did not suspect a woman could be doing illegal work."

The first successful act of sabotage, which resulted in the deaths of some 220 nazi soldiers, was carried out by three FPO operatives: Vitke Kempner, Izie Marskevitsh and Moshe Brauze. After scouting for three nights the Vilna-Vileyka rail line over which trains brought equipment to the front, they placed a bomb.
Resistance fighters Matskevitsh and Brauze fell during subsequent anti-German campaigns.

Vitke also participated with the other FPO partisans in the liberation of Vilna in July, 1944.

Kempner later married partisan leader Abba Kovner. Both emigrated to Palestine after the war. She worked as a psychologist.

Vitke Kempner Kovner died at age 92 on February 15, 2012, at her Kibbutz in Israel, Ein HaKhoresh.
